Bio


John Petrey is a violist and violinist living in Miami, Florida. He completing a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music in Coral Gables, Florida. Previously he completed an Advanced Musical Studies Certificate at Carnegie Mellon University and earned a Master's Degree serving as a Teaching Assistant and Secondary Viola Instructor with an additional performance certificate from the Eastman School of Music. John was an honors graduate of the University of North Texas with a double Bachelor of Music degrees in Viola Performance and Music Education, magna cum laude. He has studied chamber music with members of the Emerson, Shanghai, Pacifica, Dover, Ying, and Borodin quartets as well as with current members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. His primary viola teachers include Susan Dubois, Phillip Ying, David Harding, and Jodi Levitz.

John most recently served as one of the principal violists for Colorado College SMF's Concerto Sight-Reading concert, and performed the Franck Piano Quintet with other fellows after studying chamber music with Toby Appel and William Wolfram. Previously, he served as the sole principal violist of Prague Summer Nights Young Artist Program in 2017 (after also attending in 2016) performing: Mozart operas, a string quartet premiere by Greg Sandow, and symphony orchestra concerts in the cities of Prague and Tábor, Czech Republic, and Salzburg, Austria. In addition to these academic accomplishments, John has attended several other summer music festivals over the last decade including Bowdoin International Music Festival's Kaplan Fellowship Program, the Heifetz Institute, Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, Wintergreen Performing Arts Academy, and Brevard Music Center.
